D.D.T (abbreviation for dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) |
| Very effective and persistent insecticide, which acts by ingestion or contact. Practically insoluble in water, acids and alkalis; little soluble in alcohol and soluble in benzene. It was the first of the synthetic pesticides widely used in agriculture, public health and the home. Kills insects indiscriminately and accumulates from one organism to another through the food chain (bioaccumulation). In many countries its use is prohibited. |
