| Atom or group of atoms that has gained or lost electrons and presents electric charge. The electrons that are transferred are those of the external layer of the atom, easily ionizable. You can lose or gain up to three electrons, more than three would be difficult because the attraction of the positive nucleus on those that remain or the repulsion on the excess of electrons would be more intense. |
